The 4C's of Diamonds

GIA’s 4Cs revolutionized the assessment and communication of diamond quality, fundamentally altering how diamonds are evaluated, purchased, and sold.

The 4Cs are accessible to all. This framework not only helps you better understand your diamond but also guarantees accurate evaluation of its distinct features.

It provides a reliable method for clear information, standardized practices, scientific grading, and transparent assessment within the global diamond market.

1. Carat Weight

  • Definition: Carat weight measures the size of the diamond. One carat equals 200 milligrams.
  • Impact on Value: Generally, the price of a diamond increases with carat weight. However, price increases are not linear; larger diamonds can be significantly more expensive due to their rarity.
  • Visual Size: Two diamonds can have the same carat weight but appear different in size based on their cut and shape.

2. Cut

  • Types of Cuts: Common cuts include Round, Princess, Emerald, Asscher, and Cushion. Each cut has its unique characteristics and brilliance.
  • Grading: The quality of a cut is graded from Excellent to Poor. Factors such as depth, table size, and angle influence how light reflects within the diamond.
  • Effect on Brilliance: A well-cut diamond will reflect light beautifully, creating sparkle, while a poorly cut diamond may appear dull.

3. Color

  • Grading Scale: The color scale ranges from D to Z. D is colorless, while Z shows noticeable color.
  • Fancy Colors: Diamonds can also come in various colors (e.g., blue, pink, yellow). These fancy colored diamonds are graded differently based on hue, tone, and saturation. The more intense the color, the more valuable the diamond.
  • Impact on Appearance: Colorless diamonds allow for maximum light return, enhancing their brilliance and fire.

4. Clarity

  • Grading Scale: Clarity is graded as follows:

Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
Internally Flawless (IF): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification, but may have minor surface blemishes.
Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2)
: Inclusions are very difficult to see under 10x magnification.Very
    Slightly Included (VS1, VS2)
: Inclusions are minor and can be seen with some difficulty under 10x magnification.
Slightly Included (SI1, SI2): Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye in SI2.
Included (I1, I2, I3): Inclusions are obvious and may affect transparency and brilliance.

  • Influence on Value: Diamonds with higher clarity ratings are more valuable, while those with visible inclusions are usually less expensive.

Understanding these features can help you make an informed decision when purchasing a diamond, ensuring you choose one that meets your preferences and budget. More information here.
